Hanover Research: Higher Education Research Grant Alerts

Hanover is monitoring the evolving landscape of federal and foundation grants in light of the presidential administration's priorities. Before applying to any federal program, be sure to check with your institution's grants office as well as the relevant program officer.

Below is a recap of research funding opportunities that were recently announced, nationwide. While these alerts are intended to provide you with a broad-reaching overview of the opportunities available, we certainly want to hear if there are specific opportunities that you would like to pursue. FEDERAL GRANTS

Grant Name: Protection of Deployed Military Personnel from Threats Posed by Arthropod Disease Vectors (DOD) 
Summary:  The DWFP Program seeks to fund original and innovative research that supports the Advanced Technology Development of new insecticides, or improved formulations of existing insecticides for vector control, new technology or enhanced modalities of personal protection from biting arthropods, or improved efficacy and sustainability of equipment for application of pesticides.
Eligibility: There are no eligibility restrictions.
Dates:  Pre-applications are due very soon, by November 28, 2025. Full proposals are due by March 4, 2026.
FOUNDATION GRANTS
 
Grant Name: American Heart Association: Innovative Project Award
Summary:  The American Heart Association invites applications for its 2026 Innovative Project Award, which aims to support highly innovative, high-impact research that could ultimately lead to critical discoveries or major advancements that will accelerate the field of cardiovascular and/or cerebrovascular research. The award promotes unexplored ideas, research deemed innovative may introduce a new paradigm, challenge current paradigms, look at existing problems from new perspectives, or exhibit other uniquely creative qualities.
Eligibility: Applicants must be AHA members.
Dates:  Pre-proposals are due by December 10, 2025.
Grant Name: American Heart Association: Innovative Technologies for Women’s Health
Summary:  This program invites researchers, clinicians, entrepreneurs, and innovators to submit pre-proposals for funding consideration to advance groundbreaking research and novel solutions in women’s health. Selected pre-proposals will be invited to submit full proposals for competitive grants that aim to close critical knowledge and care gaps. A total of $1 million is available to fund up to 10 investigators or investigative teams proposing innovative technologies that disproportionally or exclusively impact women’s health.
Eligibility: There are no eligibility restrictions.
Dates:  Proposals are due by January 6, 2026.
Grant Name: PCORI: Upcoming Program for Research Across the Cancer Care Continuum
Summary:  This program seeks to fund high-impact, patient-centered comparative clinical effectiveness research projects led by researcher and community partnerships to focus on advancing care and outcomes across different phases of the cancer care continuum. Proposed CER projects should inform health decisions for patients, caregivers and communities in the United States experiencing high burdens and practice variations in cancer care and outcomes. 
Eligibility: Applicants must be up to ten years post-MD/PHD.
Dates:  The application window will open on December 2, 2025; LOIs are due by January 6, 2026.
Grant Name: American Lung Association: Dalsemer Interstitial Research Grant
Summary:  The Foundation invites applications for its Dalsemer Interstitial Research Grant, a mentored award meant to provide seed funding to junior investigators on the path to independence to support research into the mechanisms and biology of interstitial lung disease. The award will provide $50,000 per year for up to two years.
Eligibility: There are no eligibility restrictions beyond the early career requirement.
Dates:  Proposals are due by December 1, 2025.
Grant Name: Cystic Fibrosis Foundation: Basic CF Research
Summary:  The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation aims to cure cystic fibrosis and to provide all people with CF the opportunity to lead long, fulfilling lives by funding research and drug development, partnering with the CF community, and advancing high-quality, specialized care. The Foundation invites applications for its research grants program, which is intended to support basic science research. Studies may be carried out at the subcellular, cellular, animal, or patient levels. Proposals must be hypothesis-driven and provide sufficient preliminary data to justify foundation support. Grants of up to $150,000 per year (plus 12 percent for indirect costs) for up to three years will be awarded.

Dates:  Proposals are due by December 9, 2025.
Grant Name: Emergency Medicine Foundation: Pilot Research Grants
Summary:  The Foundation has issued a request for proposals for its Pilot Research Grant program, which is intended to provide “starter” or pilot funding for preliminary data to help initiate a successful line of research that will ultimately lead to a larger project and result in subsequent “K of R” grant funding. The program is designed to lay groundwork for a project that will eventually meaningfully impact emergency care research and is intended for a broad audience, including both clinical, translational, and basic science researchers. Feasibility, and high risk/high reward applications are encouraged. Grants of up to $100,000 will be awarded.

Dates:  Proposals are due by December 12, 2025.
Grant Name: Simons Foundation: Autism & Neuroscience Fellows-to-Faculty Award
Summary:  The Fellows-to-Faculty Award program supports talented early career scientists by facilitating their transition into tenure-track faculty positions. The focus of this program is the $600,000 three-year faculty research grant. Additionally, fellows engage with a community of investigators and receive mentoring and peer support during their transition. This request for applications is intended for PhD and/or MD-holding scientists currently in mentored research training positions who intend to seek tenure-track research faculty positions during the upcoming academic job cycle.
Eligibility: There are no eligibility restrictions.
Dates:  Proposals are due by January 14, 2026.
Grant Name: Simons Foundation: Scientific Software Research Faculty Award
Summary:  The Foundation invites applications for funding in support of new research professor positions in existing academic departments to be filled by scientific software-focused researchers. The SSRF Award will support researchers who have a strong track record of leadership in scientific software development. The program aims to stimulate the development and maintenance of core scientific software infrastructure in academic environments through creating a new, long-term, faculty-level career path.
Eligibility: There are no eligibility restrictions.
Dates:  LOIs are due by January 21, 2026.
Grant Name: Whitehall Foundation: Bioscience Research
Summary:  The Whitehall Foundation aims to support scholarly research in the life sciences that is not heavily supported by federal agencies or other foundations with specialized missions. The Foundation is interested in basic research in neurobiology, defined as invertebrate and vertebrate (excluding clinical) neurobiology, specifically investigations of neural mechanisms involved in sensory, motor, and other complex functions of the whole organism as these relate to behavior. The overall goal should be to better understand behavioral output or brain mechanisms of behavior.
Eligibility: The applicant must hold the position of assistant professor or the equivalent.
Dates:  LOIs are due by January 15, 2026.
